Honouring Marjane Satrapi

The monumental loss of Marjane Satrapi can be felt across the world, especially in the comics community. A champion of women’s rights and of resisting tyranny in her home country of Iran, Satrapi is best remembered for Persepolis (Pantheon Books), a graphic novel later adapted into a film. It is an autobiographical masterpiece exploring the Islamic Revolution through the eyes of a child, and Satrapi’s later life studying abroad before a painful homecoming. As a co-director of the film adaptation, Satrapi  became the first woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. These are just two of her incredible contributions to art and comics in a life of advocacy and resistance.

Inspired by Satrapi’s resistance and activism through the power of comics, we would like to invite you to the CCOL DIY Hang-Out Lounge in the Basketball Court during TCAF to create a page (or two) reflecting on what resistance means to you and in your life. If you’re okay with sharing your work, TCAF will collect these pages into an in-memoriam community zine available online after the festival, celebrating the memory and power of Marjane Satrapi.

If you aren’t able to make it to the DIY space, please feel free to submit a  5.5” x 8.5” / 139.7 x 215.9 mm (Half Letter) size entry via email to mj@torontocomics.com, using the subject line "Graphic Resistance"
