Workshop & Reading with Ryan North
How do you write comics? What are the secrets real comics writers use? In this workshop, Marvel Comics writer Ryan North (Squirrel Girl, The Fantastic Four) will reveal the tips and tricks he employs for writing comics professionally that anyone can use, and share "blank" comics - actual comic pages with the words in the balloons erased, ready to be filled in - for everyone to make their own. By the end, we'll all be comics writers.

A live drawing and interactive art session where Matt will discuss his book Prunella and the Cursed Skull Ring, then create an original monster character via live drawing using audience suggestions. Then, with Matt's guidance, kids will create their own live drawing monster where each will chose a feature to draw.

Workshop with J. Torres and David Namisato’s
This is a workshop on STEALING HOME by J. Torres and David Namisato, author and illustrator respectively. The Stealing Home presentation includes a reading, a behind-the-scenes look at how the book was made (how they collaborated) with slides about their method and about the history of the Japanese Internment Camps and the Japanese North American Pacific Coast baseball league mentioned in the book. For kids ages 9 to 12 who are comic book, history, or baseball fans. Stealing Home is currently a 2023 Forest of Reading Silver Birch Fiction nominee, so thousands of students across Canada are reading it!

Workshop with Matt James
Matt James will read from his new book, Tadpoles, which follows a father and son as they explore a field full of freshly formed ponds teeming with tadpoles. Grab some pencils, crayons (and whatever we can get our hands on), and get creative! We will work together on a large roll of mural paper to create our own pond and its inhabitants, combining art and—if you like—storytelling.
