The sixth annual TCAF Librarian & Educator Day, presented by The Beguiling Library Services, is happening on Friday, May 12th 2017 at Toronto Reference Library in the Bram & Bluma Appel Salon. Building on the success of our last five years, and incorporating your feedback, L&ED 2017 will once again be a full day of professional programming to help you make the most of the medium of comics in your libraries and schools.
L&ED 2017 will be held in the Bram and Bluma Appel Salon at Toronto Reference Library, a block from the TTC Yonge-Bloor station in downtown Toronto, with plenty of nearby paid parking lots. Librarians and teachers may participate in Librarian & Educator Day for free, but must register in advance.
What’s this all about?
TCAF Librarian & Educator Day is a day of programming aimed at teachers, teacher-librarians, librarians, and library workers and collection managers who want to know more about incorporating comics and graphic novels into their collections. Information-rich presentations and lectures, panel discussions, and workshops impart valuable information about building collections, improving circulation, targeting important demographics, and integrating comics into classroom use.
The day starts 8am with coffee and browsing of a curated selection of graphic novels for sale, provided by The Beguiling Library Services. At 8:45am our keynote speech launches the day’s programs; this year, our speaker is Charlie Adlard, UK Comics Laureate and artist of The Walking Dead.
Following the keynote, the morning sessions begin and the programming is split into 3 streams, aimed at newcomers and people unused to working with comics and graphic novels, people looking for ‘next level’ hints and techniques for incorporating graphic novels, and specialized info sessions, ranging from cataloguing to visual literacy to STEM and beyond.
At approximately 12:30pm we break for lunch. There are many inexpensive and hearty selections located within 5 minutes’ walk of Toronto Reference Library. However, participants who purchase our special Patron Package (see info below) are welcome to attend a special Creator’s Lunch, where many of the most important names in comics and graphic novels at TCAF will be on hand for an informal meet and greet, alongside a delicious buffet lunch. Following lunch, two more sessions take us through to the end of the day.
Patron Pack & Lunch
We encourage participants to purchase a Patron Pack for Librarian and Educator Day.
A Patron Pack costs $100 (plus tax = $105) and includes a selection of books in your selected grade/age range preference, as well as a ticket to our Creators Lunch. Only $100 for well over $100 worth of great books, and a catered lunch during L&ED with great authors? It’s too good a deal to pass up!
The Packs include quality titles selected by The Beguiling Library Services team and our publishing sponsors for their popularity and literary/artistic/social value, and are a great way to boost your graphic collection! During the Creators Lunch, you’ll be seated with a variety of local or international comics authors, artists and experts. It’s a great time to build connections and get great insight into the world of graphic novels!
We’re happy to bill your school or institution for your Patron Pack, or you can purchase it and keep the books to yourself! You’ll see a flexible variety of payment options as you sign up, and we will accept Patron Pack purchases on site.
