Edmond Baudoin
Edmond Baudoin hails from Nice, France. A talented artist and illustrator, he has been drawing comics for over 20 years. Recently, Baudoin has taken up teaching and is currently a Professor teaching comics at the Université du Québec à Hull in Canada. North American fans of Baudoin's work will most likely recall his piece in L'Association's massive COMICS 2000 anthology, or seen his work referenced numerous times in The Comics Journal. The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is very proud to welcome Mr. Baudoin as an honoured guest of the Festival.

Phoebe Gloeckner
Although Phoebe has created several graphic novels of note, including the remarkable A CHILD'S LIFE AND OTHER STORIES, she is probably best known to Toronto comics readers thanks to her appearances on television show SexTv, where she talked extensively about her work. Phoebe's newest graphic novel, DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL, is a gripping portrait of the difficult life of a girl growing up in the 70's, as told through the motif of diary entries featuring prose, illustrations, and traditional comics. Phoebe is an artist of remarkable depth and ability, and the Toronto Comic Arts Festival is proud to present her as a featured guest of the Festival. Phoebe will be performing a reading from her DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL at the Saturday evening Festival event.

Chester Brown
Writer and artist, and the renowned creator of books such as THE PLAYBOY and I NEVER LIKED YOU, and the ongoing comics series' UNDERWATER and YUMMY FUR. His graphic novel ED THE HAPPY CLOWN earned him the accolades of Rolling Stone magazine, naming him one of their IT Comics Creators. Currently, Chester is serializing his next graphic novel LOUIS RIEL, being published by Drawn and Quarterly. LOUIS RIEL will see see completion in 2003, and the final installment, issue #10, will make it's debut at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival.

Jason Little
A talented writer and artist, Jason Little first made quite an impression on the comics industry with his comic JACK'S LUCK RUNS OUT. The whole book was told featuring the face-cards from a traditional deck of playing cards and coloured in the same style, using only red, yellow, blue, black, and white. His follow up project, SHUTTERBUG FOLLIES, has been published as one of the initial offerings from Random House's new graphic novel line, a prestigious position made all-the-sweeter thanks to favourable reviews from The New York Times Book Review and Publisher's Weekly.

Jason Lutes
Writer and Artist, creator of the critically acclaimed BERLIN and JAR OF FOOLS, published by Drawn & Quarterly. BERLIN was named by Time Magazine to be one of the 10 best comic books of 2000, and is very much deserving of that acclaim. A rich, dense, sophisticated story set at the inception of World War Two, this title is truly worthy of the description "Graphic Novel". He is currently completing his epic BERLIN, published by Drawn & Quarterly.

David Mack
Painter, creator of KABUKI published by Image Comics. Combining accomplished watercolour and mixed-media techniques with a desire to push the boundaries of sequential storytelling, David Mack's work is some of the most immediately recognizable in comics. He stradles the line between "mainstream" and "alternative" effortlessly, and to great effect. He is currently writing and illustrating a new KABUKI mini-series, as well as a new graphic novel to be illustrated by Andy Lee. He is also painting the covers of Marvel Comics' ALIAS.

Michal Rabagliati
A designer and illustrator by trade, Michel Rabagliati is a Quebec native who grew up on classic French graphic novels such as TINTIN and ASTERIX AND OBELIX. Rabagliati's main introduction to comics in English came in 1990, when he designed logos for Drawn & Quarterly (Volume 1) and discovered the work of Chester Brown, Seth, Maurice Vellekoop, and Joe Matt. By 1997, he discovered a new generation of French cartoonists from the "new wave" of publishers like L'Association. With his interest in comics gradually being rekindled throughout the decade, it was finally the Dupuy & Berberian book "Le Journal d'un Album" that gave him the inspiration to write and draw his own comics. Rabagliati has completed the short works PAIL IN THE COUNTRY and PAUL: APPRENTICE TYPOGRAPHER, and his first full-length graphic novel PAUL GETS A SUMMER JOB will make it's debut at TCAF.

Seth
Seth is a reknown writer and artist, and thought to be one of the best auto-biographers in the business thanks to his stories in the comic series PALOOKAVILLE. His graphic novel, IT'S A GOOD LIFE IF YOU DON'T WEAKEN, will see print in an expanded softcover edition in time for the festival. In addition to his comics work, Seth is a sought-after illustrator whose work has appeared in The New Yorker and The Wall Street Journal. His most recent large project has been illustrating the cover and packaging for Aimee Mann's new CD, LOST IN SPACE, as well as two comic strips that appeared within it.

Former west-coaster Gabrielle Bell now makes her home in scenic Brooklyn, New York. Gabrielle Bell is responsible for the Book of series: Book of Insomnia, Book of Sleep, Book of Black, Book of Lies, and Book of Ordinary Things. She has contributed to publications such as Stereoscomic, Bogus Dead, Orchid, and Shout! Magazine. Alternative Comics will be publishing her first trade paperback work, "WHEN I'M OLD AND OTHER STORIES in March, and it will be making it's debut at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival.

Becky Cloonan
Artist and Writer, creator of numerous zines and member of the ESTRIGIOUS and MEATHAUS collectives. Farel Dalrymple
Writer and Artist, creator of POP GUN WAR and the first editor of the MEATHAUS anthology. Farel's star is definitely on the rise, having juse completed a story for Matt Wagner's GRENDEL and released a new issue of his own book, POP GUN WAR. He'll be illustrating a number of high profile (but hush-hush) new projects in 2003, in addition to the POP GUN WAR trade paperback collection.

Sam Hiti
Writer and Artist, Sam has already created a number of shorter works including END TIMES (self published). He was recently awarded the prestigious Xeric Grant, to aide in the publication of his upcoming graphic novel, due (hopefully) to premiere at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. Sam's work is both fluid and dynamic, and in our opinion he'll be someone to watch this year.

Megan Kelso
Artist and writer, the talented creator of ARTICHOKE TALES, a modern fable, will be attending the Festival as part of the Highwater Books contingent. In addition, Megan Kelso's work was recently seen in both the ROSETTA Anthology (a compendium of some of top-notch alternative comix), and DIRTY STORIES VOLUME 3 (an adult-comix anthology).

Jeffrey Kilpatrick
Jeffrey Killpatric is an illustrator and cartoonist from the Philladelphia area. He has drawn a number of comics for the MEATHAUS anthology, but his most ambitious and personal work is the new comic PETEY. PETEY is a story about the challenges and difficulties that face young children, inspired by Jeffrey's time working with kids at the Children's Crisis Treatment Center in Phillidelphia. Jeffrey will be debuting PETEY at the Festival.

Andy Lee
Andy Lee is an artist working in a traditional Chinese brush style, using sumi ink on rice paper. He describes his work as "a form of modern Zen art which combines Eastern and Western philosophies of painting. He has recently adopted the Cha'an Buddhist style of painting into his work, and will be applying it to an upcoming project in collaboration with David Mack, featuring his KABUKI character.

Carla Speed McNeil
Writer and Artist, the creator of the excellent science-fiction series FINDER which she self-publishes under the LIGHTSPEED PRESS banner. Finder is probably the best science fiction comic being published today, and that's not damning it with faint praise either. Carla has created a brilliant and fantastic world, populated by wonderfully-realized characters and she works them to create some thought-provoking drama and adventure, the way the best science fiction should. FINDER is currently available in four graphic novels. Carla will also be taking over the reigns of Oni Press' QUEEN & COUNTRY for 5-6 issues beginning in April of 2003.

John Mejias
John Mejias is a New York native and the creator of the zine/mini-comic PAPING, which has published at least six issues or so. Unfortunately, there's not much else about him on the internet...

Scott Mills
An excellent cartoonist whose graphic novels BIG CLAY POT and TRENCHES were some of my personal favorites, Mills mixes a careful line with harsh mechanical zip-tones to beautiful effect. His upcoming graphic novel, MY OWN LITTLE EMPIRE, will be out in time for the festival, and be published by Chris Pitzer and Adhouse Books.

Anders Nilsen
Artist and Writer, creator of the outstanding BIG QUESTIONS. Anders has received the Xeric Grant, and an Ignatz Award nomination for both Promising New Talent and Best Comic. Anders is working on a new story for inclusion in Drawn & Quarterly's upcoming new talent showcase.

Christine Norrie
Christine Norrie is an artist and writer living in New York City. In addition to numerous illustration projects, Christine is the artist of Oni Press' first HOPELESS SAVAGES graphic novel, as well as several KUNG-FU SPACE GIRLS short stories. Christine will be writing and drawing her first complete graphic novel for, CHEAT, which is scheduled to arrive in time for the festival. 2003 will also see at least one more graphic novel from Norrie, possibly entitled CRUSH.

Brian Ralph
Brian Ralph is the favorite artist of too many artists to mention, and looking at the deceptively simple work in his graphic novels CAVE IN and CLIMBING OUT, it's not difficult to see why. A Harvey, Eisner, and Ignatz nominated creator (he took home two of the Ignatzes), Ralph's work can also be seen in the magazines VICE and GIANT ROBOT. In addition to his graphic novels, Brian Ralph will have a number of gorgeous hand-made silkscreen prints of his work available.

Ron Rege Jr.
Ron is a self-described punk-rocker from Plymouth, Massachusetts. After attending art school and working in a copy shop for several years, he recently relocated to Northern California. His mini-comics are famous for their creative use of color xerox technology and were recently featured in an artist's book show at the Sea-Tac Airport. His name can be found in the credits of a recent Pokemon video game. Ron is probably best known for his graphic novel SKIBBER BEE BYE, as well as for his contributions to the SPX, COMICS 2000, DRAWN & QUARTERLY, and ROSETTA anthologies.

Jose Villarubia
An acclaimed fine artist, photographer, and computer colourist, Jose Villarubia came to the attention of the comics industry thanks to his ground-breaking work using fumetti and digital manipulation on the original graphic novel VEILS, published by Vertigo/DC Comics. Since then, he has used his digitial photography skills to create the majority of Alan Moore's PROMETHEA issue 7, and is doing photos and art for two upcoming Alan Moore-related works including the long-awaited new version of Moore's epic poem VOICE OF THE FIRE. Jose's most recent work can be seen on the FANTASTIC FOUR: 1234 and CAGE mini-series' from Marvel Comics.

Lauren Weinstein
Lauren Weinstein is a New York based artist and writer. Her first graphic novel, INSIDE VINEYLAND, was awarded the XERIC grant and will be debuting at the Festival. Lauren is currently running the strip Little Laurie Sprinkles and Mr. Peeves at Serializer.net, and has a ton of free comics to read at her website. Go check them out.

Michael Comeau
Zine artist, head of the CUT AND PASTE zine fair. Michael also publishes the work of a number of talented artists and zinesters, including Chris Hutsell and Marc Bell. Michael is an administrative member Toronto Comic Arts Festival staff, and is designing several posters for the festival.

Darwyn Cooke
A Toronto native who made his mark on the industry in 2002, Darwyn is best known for his gorgeous re-design of CATWOMAN, his hardcover graphic novel SELINA'S BIG SCORE (both for DC Comics), and his work on X-FORCE and X-STATIX (for Marvel Comics). Forthcoming this year will be the serialization of his new graphic novel, a 400 page story for DC Comics, and a very special two-part WOLVERINE mini-series set in Toronto for Marvel Comics.

Arthur Dela Cruz

Arthur now writes and draws KISSING CHAOS for Oni Press, and is working on his second KISSING CHAOS series, NONSTOP BEAUTY. His work has also appeared in the SPX 2002 Anthology.

Catherine Doherty
Bursting into comics seemingly from the ether, Doherty's first graphic novel CAN OF WORMS was met with a great deal of (deserved) praise. Catherine's musical project, the Jane Waynes, are very likely to make an appearance at the festival in some capacity. Catherine is currently developing her next graphic novel project.

FRECKLEBEAN GROUP
While this group of creators may not necessarily be known for their comics work, having come from varied artistic backgrounds, but they are debuting their FRECKLEBEAN ANTHOLOGY (named after a much-beloved Toronto coffee-shop) at the festival, and will be attending in various capacities.

- Dominic Bugatto works as an illustrator, and has also done stints as a designer and concept artist for both film and television. His clients have included The L.A. Times, The Wall Street Journal, RayGun Magazine, Spin, Details and FHM magazine.
- David Cullen began his career as a freelance artist, writing and penciling for Marvel Comics and DC Comics. Today, David works primarily as a storyboard artist in film and television.
- Walter Dickinson is a storyboard artist for film and televison. He is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art where he trained as a fine artist.
- Ron Kasman has probably lettered more comic books than any other cartoonist in Canada. He has worked for virtually every comics publisher in Canada and the U.S.including Image, DC, and Eclipse. He is also one of few Canadian artists to draw characters appearing on Canadian postage stamps: Fleur de Lys and Captain Canuck.
- Sean Menard is a comic book and illustration representative.
- Richard G. Taylor left his 27-year teaching career to pursue painting full-time in 2000. He has illustrated the critically acclaimed comic book series Wordsmith, DC Comics' Sandman Mystery Theater, The Silencers, The Raven Chronicles, and his own adaptation of Oscar Wilde's Salome.
- Noel Tuazon's work has appeared in a number of anthologies including Cerebus Bi-Weekly, Taboo Especial, Dennis Eichorn's Real Stuff, Reactor Girl and in the two-issue mini-series Arianne (Slave Labor) written by Rafael Nieves.
- Rob Walton has worked in the animation industry as a designer, board artist, and director since 1991. From 1995 to 1997 he published his own comic book farce, RAGMOP, to international acclaim. Rob currently works at Nelvana as an animation director.

Marcel Guldemond
Artist and Writer, creator of the acclaimed short story UNDER A SLOWLY SPINNING SUN under his own Aporia Press. Chris Hutsul
Canadian artist Chris Hutsul might be better-known under his pseudonym, ACE HAMMERSMITH, because it's under that name that he wrote and drew the weekly comic strip DUNK McDOUGAL for Eye Magazine for a number of years. Toronto readers are intimately familiar with his work, whether from the strip or in his new position as cartoonist, illustrator, and columnist for the Toronto Star.

Kagen McLeod
Writer and Artist, and the creator of INFINITE KUNG-FU, incorporating all the best parts of every kung-fu movie you ever saw, and about a dozen that you haven't. Kagan will be debuting a new issue of INFINITE KUNG-FU at the Festival. In addition to his comics work, Kagen is a noted illustrator and traditional media artist.

Marc Ngui
Toronto native Marc Ngui is an artist and writer, probably best known for his syndicated comic strip ZAK MEADOWS. The complete ZAK MEADOWS has been collected into trade paperback format as ENTER AVARIZ, including a great deal of new material that never initally saw print. Marc is also a talented illustrator, who has done work for The Toronto Star, and, er, The Beguiling. Recently, he completed all of the illustrations for the Canadian Citydwellers Survival Guide.

Michael Noonan

Bryan O'Malley
A Toronto- and London, Ontario- based artist and writer, Bryan O'Malley is responsible for numerous highly-regarded webcomics at the THRILLED website. In 2002, he illustrated the second HOPELESS SAVAGES graphic novel, GROUND ZERO, which will make it's debut at the Festival, as well as a children's book featuring Spider-Man. 2003 will see the publication of his first graphic novel, LOST AT SEA.

Joe Ollman
Joe Ollman is a Montreal area cartoonist, and has recently released his debut book CHEWING ON TINFOIL. A collection of short stories about contemporary urban life, CHEWING ON TINFOIL has been very well-received critically (and rightly so). In addition to his book, he will have original mini-comics, art and more available for sale at TCAF.

Lorenz Peters
Lorenz Peters is a Toronto-area commercial artist and comics creator. In addition to murals, storefront facade design, and illustration, Lorenz will have the first collection of his work, CHAOS MISSION, published by Peddlar Press and debuting at the Festival.

Ben Shannon
Ben Shannon is an illustrator and muscian, and a founding member of the ROYAL ACADEMY OF ILLUSTRATION AND DESIGN, along with Kagan McLeod, Cameron Stewart, and Chip Zdarsky. He's worked for clients as prestigious and diverse as Rolling Stone, Wired, The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Globe and Mail. Although he hasn't really dipped his big toe into the vast comics pool yet, he plans to very shortly.

Jay Stephens
Jay Stephens hails from the scenic city of Guelph, Ontario, and is about as multi-faceted an artist as you can get -- but he loves the heck out of comics. His creations, ATOMIC CITY TALES and JETCAT can be found in numerous trade paperback collections from Oni Press. In 2003, Schoolastic Books will produce a new collection of the JETCAT CLUBHOUSE trade paperback intended for the children's book market, and TUTENSTEIN, based on a character from the Jetcat books will make his animated television debut on the ABC and DISCOVERY KIDS networks.

Cameron Stewart
Artist Cameron Stewart is currently illustrating the adventures of Selina Kyle on DC Comics' CATWOMAN series, and recently completed several new pages of art for the final INVISIBLES trade paperback collection. Stewart is set to begin working on LeSexy with Grant Morrison sometime this year.

Diana Tamblyn
Diana Tamblyn is a Toronto writer and artist, who has created the short works GUNSLINGERS and TEQUILA WITH LIME. Her work recently appeared in the SPX 2002 anthology, which was selected by Time magazine as one of the best comics of the year. Diana plans to debut a new work about Frederick Banting at the Festival.

J. Torres
A very prolific writer whose work has appeared in the books JASON AND THE ARGOBOTS, ALISON DARE, SIDEKICKS, and THE COPYBOOK TALES, and that was just in 2002. In addition to an upcoming X-MEN mini-series, and the mini-series SPARTA (about a female gladiator), Torres will be writing the graphic novel DAYS LIKE THIS, an homage to the era of Phil and Ronnie Spector-produced girl groups. The DAYS LIKE THIS graphic novel will be making it's official premiere at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival.

A talented illustrator and artist, Maurice Vellekoop resides on Centre Island in Toronto. As reknowned for his illustration work and paintings as his comics, Maurice has produced a number of exquisite books including VELLEVISION, a collection of his art and comics, two volumes of MEN'S ROOM, short erotic comics, and THE ABC BOOK, a homoerotic primer.

Chip Zdarsky
Chip Zdarsky is a Toronto-based cartoonist, and an alumni of UofT's 1-year General Arts course, and in true alumni spirit has selflessly contributed Prison Funnies to the campus paper The Independent Weekly from September 2000 - April 2001, with no thought of financial compensation. Since then he's published The Collected Prison Funnies, and the first issue of the ongoing Prison Funnies comic book. He currently resides in the hearts and minds of our brave soldiers overseas and in a shitty, overpriced apartment in Toronto. Chip will be debuting the second issue of Prison Funnies at the Festival.
