Comic Artst Festival Held
at: SYMPOSIUM
AND ART SHOW, EVENING EVENT Price: Contact
via: The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is a celebration of comic arts and artists -- comic art meaning, commonly, the type of art you would find in Comic Books. More than that though, we celebrate the work of illustrators, zine artists and editors, and everyone braving the publishing frontier, with a specific focus on Toronto-specific creators. Often in Toronto, "comic books" are regarded mainly as the mainstream super-hero material typified by SPIDER-MAN and SUPERMAN. This is despite the fact that some of the world's greatest alternative comics writers and artists live in the area, and the city is rich with alternative and underground publishing. The goal of the festival and the TCAF organization is to present the quality and prestige of the local and international artists in a package that's respected and recognized. The organization was founded (and is currently run) by these fellows. Peter Birkemoe is the manager and co-owner of Toronto's premiere alternative comics shoppe THE BEGUILING, and has been since 1998. A long-time supporter of local writers and artists, the store has hosted many successful events over the past 8 years. Peter is the Chairman of the organization, for all intents and purposes. He can be contacted via mail@beguiling.com. Christopher Butcher has been involved in nearly every-level of the comic book industry, save for publishing. A colourist, writer, marketter, designer and journalist, he's been itching for a chance to show Toronto (and it's comics community) off to the world for a while now. Christopher is running the convention. He can be contacted via chris@beguiling.com. Michael Comeau is the former owner and operator of Penny Arcade Low Art and Print Shop in in Toronto, and the current head of the CUT AND PASTE ZINE FAIR held annually in Toronto. A talented artist and zinester, Michael is providing valuable event-planning experience and much of the convention media design. He can be contacted via michael@beguiling.com. Matt Blackett is better known to Toronto dezinens at M@B, his cartoonish self that's seen in magazines, newspapers, and comics all over the city. Matt has been an instrumental part of the festival planning committee. He can be contacted via mattb@mattbcomic.com. Jason Azzopardi is a volunteer and the organizer of the many other volunteers it's going to take to pull off the festival successfully. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, or have any questions about such, Jason can be contacted at jazzo@idirect.com. Go back to the front page?
