The 2nd annual Doug Wright Awards for Canadian cartooning will be held in Toronto on Thursday, Sept. 14 at the Ballroom of The Gladstone Hotel. The evening will kick off at 8 p.m. with an on stage interview of Chester Brown by Seth to help launch the softcover release of Brown's best-selling Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography (Drawn & Quarterly).
The awards ceremony will follow, with the trophies for Best Book and Best Emerging Talent to be handed out by Phyllis Wright (widow of Doug Wright). Canadian broadcasting icon Lister Sinclair will also be on hand to help induct his friend, the late cartoonist George Feyer, into the 'Giants of the North' (aka The Canadian Cartoonist Hall of Fame.)
The Doug Wright Awards were founded in May 2005 as a means of casting light on the wide range of cartoonists and comic artists working across Canada. The country's premiere comic awards, The Wrights are named after Doug Wright (1917-1983) a cartoonist whose strip Doug Wright's Family (or Nipper) ran for more than 30 years across Canada.
Appetizers, music and comics-inspired mayhem will follow - hopefully well into the evening.
Everyone is welcome, but there will be limited capacity at the venue so come early!
